The Meeting Place is my novella I wrote in November of 2020 for the National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO) write-a-thon. The lessons I learned during this challenge translated into skills that I added to my professional writing career.
- Harnessed persistence and determination
- Built productivity and consistency
- Learned effective preparation skills
- Understood the importance of planning & outlining, along with revising
- Met word count goals
- Connected with a community of other writers, provided feedback and suggestions
Each November, novice writers are able to test their storytelling abilities by participating in this 30-day rigorous expedition. As a full-time sophomore in college balancing five classes at once, I knew I wanted to respond to the invitation by developing a novella.
Longer than short stories, yet not quite demanding as novels, novellas are the perfect in-between for anyone looking to meet the 50,000 word length at the end of the month.
A note from Sam:
For anyone wishing to give this challenge a go next November, I recommend picking a specific time during the evening and writing at that exact time every day. This will create consistency and soon you will seamlessly make writing a part of your routine.
