Sam Guerrero is a former Kansas native trying to refine her small-town energy while embracing Atlanta’s high-flying environment. She currently attends Kennesaw State University studying both Journalism and Professional Writing. Guerrero’s introduction to writing came early in the form of storytelling, as she grew up listening to her father tell her a “cuento” (fable) before bed. El Conejo y el Zorrillo (The Rabbit and the Skunk) was the most memorable cautionary tale her father told her.
Sam found it fascinating how the characters depicted humanesque attributes such as: wishful, greedy, faint-hearted, and deceitful. It was through her father’s words and tone that she realized language, apart from communication and comprehension, similarly paves the way for creativity, recovery, and a holistic way of thinking. Her dedication to Journalism sparked in high school when she received her first byline on an article her AP Environmental Science teacher prompted her to publish.
During her time at KSU, she has worked with The Sentinel to cover stories under the Arts & Living Section. In addition to news articles, she has put together a poetry portfolio with the help of Dr. Sadre-Orafai and is seeking to publish one of her poems.
Outside of school and the library, Guerrero can be found connecting with her inner child by mastering Mexican desserts, the most recent one being Gelatina de Mosiaco (Mosiac Jello). Her appreciation for things that reach the soul include the music of Bobby Oroza or Joe Albany, black and white courtroom dramas, and soothing herbal teas. Guerrero hopes to ascertain more of life’s idiosyncratic riches as she travels internationally and immerses herself into other cultures.
